HALO Regional Meetings
HALO Regional Meetings are designed to have the various HALO’s in the states of Kansas and Missouri come together and meet, discuss, plan, and execute several programs throughout the campuses. These meetings are held once a semester.
Historically, meetings of the entities of the state of Kansas date back to the Mid-1970’s as MECHA’s from KU, Hutchinson Junior Community College, Kansas State University, Kansas Newman University; Latin American Students Service Organization (LASSO) of Washburn University; Chicano Students United in Garden City; and Mexican American Students of Ft. Hays State University met to develop a direction of Chicano/Latino student’s concerns such as Admissions, Counseling, Financial Aid information, Recruitment, Retention, and Employment for students, staff, and faculty. Other organizations would eventually join the exchange at later dates.
These meetings would continue to be held throughout the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, and eventually lead to the formation of the Hispanics of Today (HOTs) Conference, alongside several name changes of the organizations listed above. These meetings and conferences eventually ceased to take place. However, these organizations would continue to meet at several local and national conferences and exchanged information through other means.
In the Fall of 2002, these meetings resurrected and have since, enjoyed a positive tenure by the organizations, members, advisors, and campuses. These meetings continue to uphold the principles set forth many years ago and continue to serve as an information exchange by the various HALO’s involved.
