Parking Map
-
Where can I park for free?
There is some free parking on the side streets down the big hill by
JRP (where most of your classes will be). There are also parking lots
connected to JRP where parking is not restricted after 4 PM (many PRE
classes are from 4:30-7:00).
-
More Parking Information
There is a parking lot behind JRP that requires a parking permit and
is often full after 8:00/8:30 in the morning. There is also a parking
garage near the Union (pretty far from JRP-where you’ll have classes)
that costs $1.00 per hour. Meters are also available around JRP at a
rate of $1.00/hour.
Places to Live
Recommended Places to Live
-
Orchard Corners on 15th and Kasold is not
too bad. The management is nice and if you have 2 or 3 friends to rent
the same dorm style apartment you don't have to pay utilities.
-
Houses are cheap to rent if you have a
roommate.
-
Apartments on 9th St. in between Iowa and
Ohio, because those are safe, quiet, and close to JRP (10 min. walking
distance)
-
Tuckaway Apartments at Harper Square (23rd &
Harper). The apartments are very clean, relatively new, quiet, and close
to K10 for trips to KC or the Edwards Campus. I think rent went up since
I was there so they might be more expensive.
-
I love living out west! It's quiet, away
from the undergrad chaos, but it's near 6th street, Wakarusa, and 10 hwy
so I can still get anywhere quickly.
-
Near campus is really nice, but probably
noisier than being outside of town; also parking on game days is a pain
if you live near the stadium or fieldhouse.
-
The area by 23rd and Hyvee is nice, as is
Tuckaway on 6th St.
-
If you do want to live near campus, I did
live in Berkeley Flats (right behind the stadium) which is just a short
walk from JRP, and they weren't too bad. A 1 bedroom is about $500/mo
plus utilities, etc. They allow small pets I think. After your first
year you aren't on campus as much anyway (plus you might have to drive
to KC Edwards campus for classes), so it's not a big deal to live near
campus.
Places NOT Recommended to Live
- Any Hawk's Pointe.
- Don't live on campus in Jayhawk Towers.
- Apartment between 6th and Michigan, unsafe apartment and noisy.
- Do not live in the student ghetto (all the rental houses near
campus), unless you want to live in a crappy apt for way too much.

Recommended Part Time Jobs
- KU Job Search Web Site
- I work for the School of Ed as a peer advisor and it is amazing. The
hours are very flexible because you are able to work around your
classes. The supervisors and staff are also very helpful and fun to work
with.
- On campus jobs, especially those with appointments.
- Interning at the University Career Center! A great way to start
getting client contact hours to build up your vita/resume for practicum.
- Something, anything related to your undergraduate major or
Counseling Psychology. Basic college jobs (bartending, waitressing,
retail, etc) aren't going to help your vita out at all. These might be
good to have while you are searching, but look for jobs outside the
Counseling Psych department too. Most of those assistantships go to doc
students. Look into the psychology department, social welfare, other
education fields, etc.
