Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice and ECM Christian Peacemaker Team
ECM participates in the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice. This group, established by the Oread Meeting of Friends (Quaker) in 1976, is committed to promoting peace and justice in Lawrence and the world. Along with ECM, LCPJ has cosponsored forums on Iraq (The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Nuclear Bombing Commemoration), and Globalization. Meetings are held each August 6, 12 noon in downtown, Lawrence.
ECM was the recipient of the Tom and Anne Moore Peace and Justice Award in 1999, given by LCPJ.
ECM supported the Iraq vigils held in opposition to the war with Iraq. We also placed a sign outside of ECM that was signed by many.
On October 7, 2003, the ECM Board passed a resolution in support of the resolution by the Lawrence Bill of Rights Defense Committee calling for the Lawrence City Commission and the Douglas County Commission to repeal the Patriot and Homeland Security Acts.
ECM, LCPJ, Oread Friends (Quaker) and Peace Mennonite sponsored a two part series on the possibility of universal conscription being instituted:
- "Pro and Con of a Military Draft or Universal Conscription," Sunday, October 10, 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church
- "Conscientious Objection: Reality vs. Rumour," Sunday, October 24, 7:30 p.m. at Ecumenical Christian Ministries
In fall 2007, the banner "No War in Iraq: Not In Our Names" was displayed in front of Danforth Chapel on a weekly basis.
