October 16—1:30, in the Paul
Adam Lounge. Opera Study will present a DVD of Mozart's Don Giovanni. Some years ago Life
Magazine
called Don Giovanni the greatest opera ever composed and one of the finest
achievements of Western Civilization. Here is a work that contains
almost all of the elements of a play that Aristotle advocated—good plot,
spectacle, interesting characters, and elegant language. Now add to this
the magic of Mozart's ever-fresh score and you have a drama-giacosa that contains all
of the comic/tragic elements of life. The work moves through comic and
tragic episodes to the climactic scene of the Don's death and
condemnation. Finally there is the quiet scene for the survivors, which
calms the wild emotions of the audience before they leave the
theater—thus achieving fully that catharsis, or feeling of relief, that
Aristotle advocated for his perfect drama.
Our DVD is from a
production of the Metropolitan Opera in 2000, with James Levine conducting the
Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and a fine cast that includes Bryn Terfel as
Don Giovanni, Sergei Koptchak as the Commandatore, Renee Fleming as Donna
Anna, Paul Groves as Don Ottavio, Solveig Kringelborn as Donna Elvira,
Ferruccio Furlanetto as Leporello, John Relyea as Masetto, and Hei-Kyung
Hong as Zerlina.
The opera will be presented in two acts.
Coffee, tea, and cookies will be served during the intermission.
