    March 9—Program begins at 2:30; sherry at 2:00. Following the birthday celebration for March birthdays, our guest speaker will be Roy Creek, who will bring us "Memories of Parachute Landings in Normandy in World War II." He is an excellent speaker and his book on his experiences as an Army officer is about to be published.

    March 21—Film at 2:00; coffee at 1:45. This month we will see the remarkable Australian film Shine with the Academy Award performance of Geoffrey Rush as the disturbed but brilliant Australian concert pianist playing Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto.

Drama Study Group

    March 17—1:30 in the Music Room. The new vehicle to be undertaken at that time will be Schiller's drama, Mary Stuart. The matter of multiple translations is not (at least by the group's leader) expected to pose a serious problem: any standard English version (of which several will be on hand) should do, with the exception of that by Steven Spender—abridged and much shortened from the original. As always, questions or comments are welcome.

Opera Study

    March 3—1:00, on the second floor. We will be presenting the fifth and last in our series of the operas of Richard Strauss, Die Frau Ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow).
 
The Decca DVD will be presented with our new surround sound system.  The major singers will include tenor Thomas Moser as the Emperor, soprano Cheryl Studer as the Empress, mezzo soprano Marjana Lipovsek as the nurse, baritone Bryn Terfel as Keikobad's messenger, baritone Robert Hale as Barak, and soprano Eva Marton as Barak's wife..  The conductor of this production from the Salzburg Festival of 1992 will be Sir Georg Solti.  Coffee, tea, and cookies will be served during the intermission after Act I.  The DVD provides subtitles in English. Playing time: three hours and twenty minutes.

Metropolitan Opera Radio

    Radio broadcasts of the Met can be heard in crystal clear sound via the Internet each Saturday at the home of Vic and Mary Wallace, 1509 Massachusetts. Parking is in the church lot next door. Jim Seaver provides insight and librettos.

Pre-Concert Dinner

    March 31—5:00 in the Smith Center at Brandon Woods. The final preconcert dinner of the Spring term will be offered prior to the piano concert by the 2005 Van Cliburn Piano Contest winner, Alexander Kobrin. Russian fare will be on offer! Reservations may be made with sign-ups at the Ten O'clock Scholars meetings or can be made by calling Grant Goodman.  The price of the meal remains $11.50 per person.
 
Singing for Fun

Out of Town Travel

    April 17—Trip to Leavenworth and Fort Leavenworth. The trip will include the Carousel Museum, with a ride on a carousel.  Lunch will be at the Queen's Pantry. After lunch, a tour of Fort Leavenworth and a stop at the Frontier Museum.
