NEWS EVENTS

Oral Histories: The following oral histories are newly completed and are now in the Adams Alumni Center's library: Greg Wade, Douglas McKay, and Leslie Dienes.

Phoenix Awards: Two active members of the Endacott Society are among the eight winners of the 12th annual Phoenix Awards, a project of the Lawrence Arts Commission through the City of Lawrence.

Joyce Schild will receive the Volunteer in the Arts award. Joyce has been active in the arts for over 60 years in Lawrence. She is the major founder of Art in the Park, which led to her subsequent work in establishing the Lawrence Art Guild which in turn led to the development of the Lawrence Arts Center. She has taught art and volunteered her art for many local and state projects. She is herself an artist working in charcoal, watercolor, enamel, stained glass and other media. Her art appears in many Lawrence homes, and beyond. Joyce was nominated by Phyllis Lawton with support from Betty Alderson.

Ted Johnson is the first winner of the newly designated Phoenix Award for Arts Advocate. He has been a part of the KU faculty since 1968. Ted is well known for his Stop Day Walking Tours of the KU campus, tours reaching out to all Lawrence residents which focus on the art and architecture of the campus. In addition to his years of teaching French and Art History, Ted does life drawing and figure studies and exhibits locally and in Topeka. He is an advocate for the humanities and an active concert-goer. Nominated by his wife Mary and children Anne and Stephen, the latter a 2004 Phoenix winner, Ted becomes the first Phoenix winner to share honors within a family unit.

The Phoenix Awards will be presented Sunday, November 4, at 2:00, in the auditorium of the Lawrence Arts Center. A reception will follow. The public, and certainly all Endacott members, are invited.
