An Idea is Born
During the summer of 1996, Sister Aida A. Garcia decided it was time to bring a Latina-based sorority to the University of Kansas. After much discussion and exploration into Greek organizations, she concluded that Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority was the best fit for the community and its needs.
Aida spoke directly with Founding Mother Lupita Temiquel and Mary Peterson, who instructed her to send a letter of intent to the National Board. Sister Lisa Tamayo, a founding mother of the Iota chapter and transfer student from Kansas State University, came in contact with Aida on September 10, 1996 at a meeting of the University's Hispanic American Leadership Organization. Together, they discussed the next steps that needed to be taken to charter KU's first Latina sorority.

Turning Words into Actions
In October of that year, an interest group comprised of Aida A. Garcia, Angela Valdez, Teresa Valdez, and Christina Zuniga was ready to turn in a petition for colony status. On January 18, 1997, the group was granted colony status. On February 15, 1997 at 9:30 pm, Aida A. Garcia, Raquel Avila, Tiffinie Fernandez, Adele Salazar, Teresa Valdez, Angela Valdez, Janell Avila and Lisa Leontiev were made associate members by Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority's Iota Chapter at Kansas State University.
The induction of Hilda Soza War Soldier and Aurora Marin, on April 2, 1997, was the first ritual of the University of Kansas' Colony. With the addition of these two women, the colony was able to take the final steps in completing their petition for chapter status.
At the beginning of the Fall 97 semester, Myra Fernandez was recruited to be the tenth and final member needed to attain chapter status and paperwork was sent in for the review of the National Board of Directors. On September 13, 1997 at 4:01 pm, the women at the University of Kansas were informed that the National Board of Directors had unanimously approved their petition for chapter status. The University of Kansas was given the Delta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority.
