The purpose of the Graduate and Professional Association is to work to enhance the learning experience, both inside and outside the classroom, of all graduate and professional students at the University of Kansas. The mission of this body is fourfold:
  • To serve graduate and professional students at the University of Kansas by addressing their needs and concerns;
  • To promote graduate and professional student status and achievements (e.g., research, teaching, and service) to the administration, community, and Board of Regents;
  • To develop productive working relationships with all departmental, administrative, and governance bodies at the University of Kansas;
  • and To provide opportunities that facilitate graduate and professional students' academic and professional development.

GPA Standing Charges

1.  To carry out legislative responsibilities between Student Senate and the Graduate and Professional Association.
2.  To develop and coordinate mechanisms for receiving, disseminating, and seeking information regarding graduate student issues (student affairs and academic affairs) to Student Senate, academic departments, university administration, Board of Regents, Kansas Legislature, and peer institutions.
3.  To orchestrate consistent, responsive and representative communications with graduate student organizations.
4.  To maintain the annual university-wide orientation program for graduate students.
5.  To maintain and enhance the Graduate Student Mentorship Award Program.
6.  To sustain and strengthen the relationship with the Graduate Teaching Assistant Coalition.
7.  To evaluate and revise university policies which are unnecessarily restrictive or problematic to enhance the quality of life for graduate students.

 

Additional Charges

1. To continue exploring ways of increasing participation in the Graduate Affairs Committee.
2.  To work with the Dean of the Graduate School and the designated minority student recruiter to increase minority students in graduate programs.
3. To communicate and coordinate graduate student representation in the KU Center for Research.
4.  To evaluate select University services and recommend changes to address graduate student needs.
