what technology tranfer is. As a legal intern you will be responsible for drafting CDAs (Confidential Disclosure Agreements) and preparing license
agreements based on negotiations between the University of Kansas and 3rd party companies and individuals. You will act as a liason between
researchers and inventors at KU and IP/patent attorneys at major firms across the nation.
The Office of Technology Transfer typically hires interested candidates during the fall and spring semesters through the externship program at the KU School of Law.

Patent Experience Extern Program
Unpaid training opportunities are available from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for students who are in college and pursuing degrees in engineering, science or patent law. These opportunities provide work experience related to their academic program, and allow the students to explore career options and develop their personal and professional skills. They will also be exposed to our work environment and learn about our mission, as well as the responsibilities of various patent practices, including practical working knowledge of patent decision-making processes.

USPTO Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences
Internship/Externship Program for Law Students
Purpose is to provide law students interested in pursuing a career in patent law with an opportunity to acquire a practical working knowledge of the
decision-making processes of the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.The Internships/Externships under this program do not provide remuneration
to the participant.
The program will generally provide the participant with the following opportunities:
- Work under the supervision of an Administrative Patent Judge;
- Participate in the evaluation of ex parte appeal(s) and the drafting of the subsequent opinion(s), as directed by the assigned panel(s);
- Tour of the USPTO facilities;
- Visit to the CAFC and Supreme Court, when possible;
- Training at the USPTO’s Patent Academy, when available;
- Observe hearing(s) on patent appeal(s);
- Training at the Board, under the guidance of a Program and Resources Administrator.
The nature of the work to be performed will be substantive and will vary according to the needs of the assigned Administrative Patent Judge.
