The Floyd H. and Kathryn Krehbiel Scholarship Hall has officially opened its doors. The hall, funded by a $4 million gift to KU Endowment from 1970 alumnus Carl C. Krehbiel, is home to 50 men.
Chancellor Robert Hemenway will be among the speakers at the dedication at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the hall, 1301 Ohio St. The building was designed and built as a mirror image of Dennis E. Rieger Hall.
Krehbiel, a longtime Kansas legislator, made the gift in honor of his parents, both KU alumni. He also pledged $400,000 for a separate building maintenance fund. He lived in Stephenson Hall in the late ‘60s.
“I had a great experience living in Stephenson Scholarship Hall when I was a student,” said Krehbiel, a native of Moundridge. “My parents were dedicated to KU and to their children, and this is a way for me to honor them and create a positive living environment for future generations of KU students.”
The new hall is an 18,000 square foot, three-story building and can house 50 men in two-person rooms and four-person suites. It also features a quiet, energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling unit and was designed to blend in with the neighborhood's turn of the century homes.
"A legislator, a businessman and a retired lieutenant colonel, Carl Krehbiel carries a long tradition of service to his country and his state," Hemenway said. "That tradition extends to the future residents of KU's newest scholarship hall, who will ultimately benefit from his foresight and generosity."
