MONDAY AUGUST 28TH

At the August 28th meeting, Lennea brought up a idea that for
those who are especially keen on working with kids hands on can
do. Big Brothers and Big Sisters have a program where, for just
three hours, you can be a “Big” for a night. This night can be
anytime during the year. As a group, we were thinking of
possibly doing a puppet show or something to that effect so we
can still incorporate UNICEF's goals of awareness, etc. Please
let us know if you are interested in this and we can arrange
something as a group.

Next, we talked about the International Dinner. We have a
possible date and location. At this time, we have agreed on
having the dinner on November 14 at 7pm, possibly at the First
United Methodist Church where Jubilee Cafe is held, or perhaps
at the First Presbyterian Church, which is where the dinner was
held last year. In the near future we will finalize this. We are
also thinking of donating the money raised from the dinner and
auction toward the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over a thousand
people are dying there daily from violence and disease of which
600 of these deaths are children.

We will be tabling in the middle of September—the details
will be announced when it has been confirmed. Tabling is a great
way to get new members and donations as well as socializing. In
addition, each week we will have a person present a topic of
their choice that they have researched. You can go to the UNICEF
website for possible topics or just watch the news about issues
that children in developing countries face, i.e. famine,
disease, education, vaccination, et cetera. The presentation
doesn’t need to be long—less than five minutes is preferable.

Mark Skoglund, coordinator of FIGHT, came to the meeting and
said that the group has moved their meetings to meeting
bi-weekly, possibly at 7pm on meeting nights. This is a very
nice gesture since many new members have expressed an interest
in participating in UNICEF and FIGHT. Now you can do both! If
you are interested in receiving emails from FIGHT, you can email
Mark at fight@ku.edu and they will put you on their e-mail list.

One last note, we need to make sure we keep office hours.
Thanks to everyone who signed up to do office, and remember to
sign-in at the red check-in folder on the desk of the Student
Involvement and Leadership Center.

That's all for now. We won’t be meeting on September 4th due to
Labor Day, but will be meeting on the 11th at 8pm once again in
the Pine Room!

MONDAY AUGUST 21ST

We watched a brief video about UNICEF as a worldwide
organizaation. Then we talked about what KU UNICEF does, we
fundraise throughout the year for children overseas who are
facing emergencies of various kinds. As a campus group, we also
aim to inform college students and the public in general about
what we do and what UNICEF does.

Also, at the meeting, we began talking about the
International Dinner, which is typically held in October or
November. Please check your calenders to see when a date would
be best for you to help. We need feedback from the group on that
as well as a place to have the dinner and issues children face
that we can try to address and maybe donate the money we raise
from the dinner. Our goal, besides raising money for children
(which is vitally important), is to also have as many people
involved in these activities, that is why we want everyone to
share their ideas and times that are convenient for you. The
more people we have helping, the more children will benefit from
our efforts.

On another note, we will start tableing in 2-3 weeks from
now on Wescoe beach. At a future meeting we will give more
details about that.

Also, we will need members to help keep office hours in our
cubicle. Our cubicle is located on the 4th fl. of the Kansas
Union in the Student Involvement and Leadership Centre. We need
to keep at least 10 hours in the cubicle each to maintain our
"office" space.

One last thing. We send out emails to everyone through a
listserve. If you want to reply to someone in specific, say the
president, then you will need to send an email specifically to
her email address, not to the listserve. If you click on reply
and send through an email sent on the listserve, then everyone
will see your email. So beware!!

It was nice to see so many new faces at Monday's meeting! Hope
you will come next week!
