TUESDAY JANUARY 30TH
Hello everyone, Here are the meeting mintues for last night's meeting: Office hours. We need people to do office hours. You can do these anytime of the week when it is convenient for you. You can study in the cubicle as well. Make sure when you keep office hours to log in in the front desk book. Come and go as you like, no set schedule. We will be showing the movie Turtles Can Fly. Its about children in Iraqi Kurds. It may be showing on Feb. 13 at 7:30pm at Miller Scholarship where Paola lives based on how many people can attend that night. It is a Tuesday in lieu of a meeting. We are thinking about doing a puppet show at the Lawrence Public Library. Lennea, Nathan Mack, and myself have signed up for it, but anyone can do it if they want to. Let Lennea know at shifra@ku.edu or at a meeting if you want to do this. The library provides everything, we just come up with a script. Also, we may hang up banners at the Lawrence schools that have information about children worldwide what they deal with and things about UNICEF. In addition, we will be doing World Children's Day in the Park either April 22 or 29 (Sunday) at South Park. NSCS (National Society of Collegiate Scholars) will be helping us (hopefully). For a plug for NSCS, they have hundreds of time slots open for students to tutor in the Lawrence Schools. You only have to commit .5 hours per week and can tutor in anything from K-12. Contact Kim Duensing if interested at honeykim@ku.edu. UNICEF International is working on a malaria campaign. They are trying to make sure that visitors to countries, such as in Asia where malaria is prevalent, take quanine pills (malaria pills) to protect themselves and not bring the disease to their home country. They are also working with the medical community in coming up with a malaria vaccine. Let's hope they do and soon. KU 4 Uganda has some events coming up. The first is bowling at Jaybowl Sun. Feb. 11 3pm. Cost is $6 per person and KU 4 Ugand will pay for drink and maybe snack. Also, Feb. 16 there is a letter writing campaign. They will be handwriting letters to Kansas congress people concerning Uganda. KU 4 Uganda will provide everything. It will be from 8-10pm at 614 Kentucky (name of the building). Feb. 27 at 8pm will be a showing of Uganda Rising, possibly in Big 12 room (stay tuned for details). On Mar. 6-7 Invicible Children will be shown as well as some of the production team who put the film together will be here. Mar. 6 the showing is at 7:30pm Woodruff, KS UNION. Mar. 7 will 8pm Kansas Room, 6th fl KS UNION. Enough said, enjoy the snow! Tashia
TUESDAY JANUARY 23RD
Hello UNICEFers, I hope you all enjoyed your break. Last night we had our first meeting of the semester. Here are the minutes of that meeting: First we talked about a project that we did last year in April. It is called "World Children's Day" and we had it in the park. The kids and parents and we too, of course, enjoyed it. There were various stations that the kids went to learn about UNICEF and its mission. This year, we are planning to team up with NSCS (National Society of Collegiate Scholars). They were looking for something to do with the Lawrence community and since I am a member of both NSCS and UNICEF I mentioned about our day in the park and they took me up on it. Next on the agenda was a film about Uganda. It is a new documentary on the country and we may join KU 4 Uganda in showing that film. Also, we talked about tabling. We are in the process of trying to figure out the best time to do that, so we will keep you all posted when we find out more. In addition, if any of you have ideas of activities we could do or some issue/ country you are passionate about, please don't hesitate to bring it up. We'd love to have the ideas, to get people involved in the group. One more thing. I would like to form a team for Relay For Life. This event is the first Friday and Saturday of May at Memorial Stadium. It runs from Fri. 6pm to Sat. 6am and you don't have to be there the whole time. It is a lot of fun. There are different activites besides walking around the track a million times and free food. We tent on the hill by the stadium. Relay For Life is sponsored by the American Cancer Society for people involved, we raise money for the organization. It is worthy cause and a lot of fun. Many KU students and people from the Lawrence community join the walk. If you are interested or have further questions please contact me (Tashia) as soon as you can by email. My email is: ancient@ku.edu Enjoy your first week of classes and the weekend!!! Tashia
