  Children's Link to Music
    History

Music Mentors Society was created in Fall 1999 by Christie Garton, a student at the University of Kansas. After 15 years of music, Garton saw the positive results of music instruction in her own life and wanted to bring that to every child with an interest and passion for music. The program matches musicians at KU with public school children who cannot afford private music lessons. Each mentor meets with his or her student weekly for 30 minutes.

In Fall 2000, Music Mentors became part of KU's Center For Community Outreach, a student-run, student-funded organization that provides volunteer opportunities for KU students

Music Mentors performed for a holiday reception at the White House on December 28th, 2000. Through the support of the Lawrence and KU communities, 8 Central Junior High students, their KU mentors, and Central Junior High sponsors traveled, all expenses paid, to Washington D.C. for this opportunity of a lifetime.
