Natural Ties was established in 1988 by a group of students at the University of Kansas. It began as a simple relationship between several young men
and quickly developed into a lifelong friendship. This friendship marked the first "Natural Tie" and the beginning of a national organization with the simple purpose of providing hope for
our disabled community. In 1992 President George Bush honored Natural Ties as his 687th Point of Light. In expressing his feelings toward Natural Ties, President Bush commented:
"We must not allow ourselves to be measured by the sum of our possessions or the size of our bank accounts. The true measure of any individual is found in the way he or she treats others -
and the person who regards others with love, respect, and charity holds a priceless treasure in their heart."
The strong tradition of Natural Ties continues today at the University of Kansas
with twenty organizations composed of nearly one hundred individuals. The Kansas chapter of Natural Ties has a board of directors consisting of eight students and an Organization Advisor
that is an administrator within the University of Kansas. The organization also staffs an office in the Organizations and Leadership section of the Kansas Union.
