Become a PFCS Volunteer!
Lawrence schools desperately need our help. Will you answer their call?
Our PFCS volunteers work in classrooms, resource rooms, and before-and after-school programs. They provide academic assistance, encouragement and support, and help with organizational and study skills for at least 30 minutes each week. During a volunteer's scheduled time, he or she may assist with a class art project, work with a student on long division problems, or simply listen to a child read. Some volunteers work one-on-one with the same student each week, providing help, often with reading and/or math skills. Although a majority of our volunteers work in the elementary schools, some junior high and high school students receive free tutoring from this program as well.
Volunteers of the Planning for College Success mentoring program have the opportunity to develop a close relationship with a student at one of Lawrence's K-12 schools. Volunteers generally meet with the same student each week, although situations vary. Mentors do offer academic advice, but often students benefit more from having the undivided attention of a positive role model. Mentors and students may set goals, talk about friends, or just enjoy a computer game or stroll around the school. Mentors have the opportunity to give students the encouragement for school and life that they might not otherwise receive.
