What Do Volunteers Do?

Volunteers do a variety of things, depending on where they are sent. When volunteering at an elementary school volunteers could be doing any of these things: reading to small groups of kids, coloring with kids, teaching ABCs, reading to classrooms, helping younger students learn to read, listening to older students read, reviewing math flashcards, working on arts and crafts, working one on one with students in a variety of school subjects, etc.

When volunteering at a junior high or high school, volunteers are either helping in the after school study program or mentoring one on one. When assisting in the after school study program, volunteers help students in a variety of subjects. When mentoring one on one with a student, volunteers will assist with several things. Mentors are asked to help students with their homework, organizational skills, study skills, social skills, and goal setting. Mentors will work hard to help students raise their grades. Mentors act as positive role models, friends, and liaisons between students and teachers.
