What
is PACE?
Currently in its seventh year at the University of Kansas, the Planning For College Success Tutoring and Mentoring Program sends KU student volunteers to local K-12 school students as dedicated, energetic tutors and mentors. PACE is sponsored by the University of Kansas Chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an organization that recognizes first- and second-year college students for outstanding academic achievement, but all KU students are encouraged to volunteer. There are more than 200 NSCS chapters nationally, each with its own PACE program.
Each PACE program is dedicated to helping local students in K-12 schools recognize the value of post-secondary education and the hard work and determination required to receive it. Through PACE volunteers, local students receive one-on-one attention, help with academic and social issues, and a positive role model.
KU PACE tutoring positions are open to all students at the University of Kansas, not just NSCS members. This has allowed KU PACE to serve a total of 19 schools in USD 497 and see the number of volunteers jump from less than 10 to hundreds of students in just six years. PACE has formed many partnerships over the years as well. Nationally, PACE is a partner of America's Promise. KU PACE is a partner of Lawrence Education Achievement Partners (LEAP), the Human Development and Family Life department of the University of Kansas, and other student organizations such as AWARE.
KU PACE is staffed by members of NSCS including a president, two vice presidents of administration, and 5-6 school coordinators who serve as liaisons between KU PACE and the individual schools. KU PACE may be contacted at PACEku@gmail.com.
