* Discussed SAGE Picnic (August 19, 2001)

  • setup starts: 4:30
  • picnic begins: 5:00
  • passed around sign-up sheet for volunteers to help with the picnic

* SAGE Advice

  • Articles
    • Introduction to new graduate students: Jamie
    • Something about the "October Conference": Emily D.
    • Spotlight on new faculty member: Amanda
    • EAT article: Alan
    • President's article: Kirby
  • Tentative deadline for SAGE Advice articles: Friday, September 14
  • Turn articles in to Ellen

* Creative/Critical Readings

2 creative readings and (possibly) 1 critical reading are planned per semester. The critical reading (if there is one) will be held on campus. We will avoid themes, as this seems to have discouraged participation last year.

The tentative dates are:

  • First creative reading: 9/28 (to be organized by Kirby & Emily D.)
  • Critical reading: 10/25 (to be organized by Matthew C. and Joanna)
  • Second creative reading: 11/30 or 12/7 (to be organized by Alan & Shawn)

* The idea of doing "street readings" at the upcoming University open house was brought up. Further information to follow when available.

* There was a considerable amount of discussion concerning SAGE finances:

  • SAGE has a small budget from the graduate assembly, but use of these funds is restricted. We are looking into whether SAGE can get funding for travel awards (these have fallen through in the past). Along the same lines, we want to make sure that graduate students are aware that funding for conferences is available through the graduate school and the department (ask for details if you don't know about this).

    * Should we hold the SAGE booksale this year?
    The time involved in planning this might be prohibitive (volunteers welcome!), but it was mentioned that the recent office renovations will likely result in a greater availability of book donations this year.

    We are always interested in new fundraising ideas.

    We discussed our reasons for wanting to raise money. The primary goals mentioned were travel money and student outreach.

    * Kirby suggested that we hold regular (probably monthly) brown bag lunches and invite faculty members to speak about their research/pet projects, etc... These lunches would give students an opportunity to meet more faculty members as well as hopefully helping the professors themselves in their research.

    The days (MTWRF) this would be held would probably vary from month to month to allow as many people as possible to attend on at least some occasions. It was suggested that one of these meetings could be used for students to present their research instead of doing a separate critical reading (discussed above)

    If you know of any professor you would like to invite to do this, please let Joanna or Kirby know as soon as possible.

    * The next SAGE meeting will be on Tuesday, September 11 at 5:00 in the conference room.
