Sellards at Semester
by Rebecca
To an incoming freshman, the scholarship halls sound like a pretty good deal. The idea of going off to college already has plenty of scary ideas attached to it without adding in "dorm-life". To already be a part of an established community is very appealing.
After spending a semester at Hashinger Hall, I found out a few days before the start of the spring semester that I had been accepted into Sellards. While I enjoyed living in the newly-renovated Hashinger with lots of my friends and fellow music majors, I was ready to be out of the hotel-style living and into a household. I was already very familiar with Sellards because my two best friends had been living there in the fall, so I was ready to move in.
I made the journey down from Daisy Hill, back up Mt. Oread, and into Sellards. But there was no Hawk Week chock full of fun and activities geared towards getting to know your housemates better. Everyone was happy to have us "new women" in the hall and my roommates were very friendly, ut nevertheless, by coming at semester, I missed the novelty of everything being new. The first Loopy Day wasn't as special, the first dinner with KK or Pearson was just another dinner.
Despite all this, I have loved living in Sellards for the past eleven weeks. All the components of my duties in the hall were hard to understand at first but everyone here is so accepting and helpful. I definitely don't have everyone's names down but I usually learn a new name and face during phone duty. I love our giant counter of cereal and our collection of colorful bowls. I can't wait to really get involved next year and be able to help more freshmen get an idea about the climate of Sellards. This hall has such a positive atmosphere that's conducive to learning and fun.
