New Women Experiences

by AnneMarie

As a new woman at Sellards I have met so many amazing women.  When I came to KU, I had not even been in Sellards before, but the executive board was already here to welcome us and to make it feel like home from the beginning.  They even wrote our names on the sidewalk outside of the house welcoming us.  Having the older women around to start college made the experience a lot less stressful.  I really appreciated having people around who knew about campus and were willing to help us get to where we were going on our first days of classes.  I really enjoyed having other Marching Band members in the house to go to practices and the games with.  Having all of these amazing women around made my first year at KU a great one and I cannot wait to be the older woman for the incoming woman.

As my family and I trekked up the hills of KU to finally drop off the long-awaited college student, nervous thoughts filled my mind: what are my roommates going to be like? I’m living with how many girls? 46? We pulled into the parking spot labeled “For Service Vehicles Only” I anxiously got out of the car and walked up to the front door.  I was cheerfully greeted by several girls wearing homemade “Sellards” t-shirts.  They each told me their name, and as I attempted to remember them, I was handed paperwork, and the girls left with my parents. By the time I was finished filling out the paperwork, I took a journey up the stairs to my room.  To my surprise, everything was already there! This meant that I would need to sort through everything and organize it all to fit in my ridiculously small living quarters.  I eventually met my other roommates and we got along well. My experience on the move-in was overwhelming but, looking back on it I realize that the girls in Sellards are great. I know they will always be willing to help me.
