Schol Hall Olympics

by Ivy

My first memory of Sellards, besides the amazingly welcoming move-in process, has to be participating in the Schol-Hall Olympics. These activities immediately got me involved in the Scholarship Hall community and I got to have some fun too! It provided me the opportunity to meet new people in and outside of Sellards. I think the Schol-Hall Olympics are a perfect way to welcome new residents into the community.

It was my first full day at Sellards and I was downstairs getting to know my new roommate Joanna. We heard someone was trying to get together a team for the 3-on-3 basketball tournament. I decided I should probably donate my superior basketball scoring skills (10 points in the 3 years I played!) to the team. Joanna also opted to play, so we headed out to the court behind Battenfeld. The competition was tough and everyone played hard regardless of the 105°F heat. We won our first game, scoring points for the Sellards Olympic team. I even scored 3 points! Sadly enough our Cinderella story came to an end when we lost our second game. Even though we did not win, I still felt like I was becoming a true Sellardite. I also met several new people and got to know my roommate better in the process.

Another fun Schol-Hall Olympics’ activity I participated in was the Picture Scavenger Hunt. Everyone on the Sellards team had to combine their knowledge of the KU campus in order to know what to take a picture of. Since I was a new student I did not know where hardly anything was, but the returning students were very helpful. My favorite memory of that event was making snow angels in front of Snow Hall for our picture. Once again we did not win, but it was a valuable hall-building activity.

I think the Schol-Hall Olympics provides one of the first ways for a resident to get involved with the community and their individual halls. The events help build camaraderie between the participants. These events have helped define who I am as a Sellards’ resident.
