Stouffer Place is a complex of 283 apartments in 25 units reserved for students with children (who live with them on a permanent basis) or students who are married. One-, two-, or three-bedroom apartments are available. On-site staff and family-friendly programs encourage a strong sense of community. E-mail housing@ku.edu for questions about Stouffer Place and for information about furniture rental options for Stouffer Place residents. Stouffer Place Apartments are conveniently located on the university campus at 19th and Iowa, just southwest of Allen Field House, with easy access to major traffic ways and shopping centers. Traffic enters the complex from 19th Street. The complex consists of 25 two-story brick buildings on a terraced hillside. There are up to 12 apartments in each building. Three building interiors have been renovated (a total of 40 apartments), with more to come. These buildings have two- and three- bedroom apartments and are equipped with central air-conditioning. One of these buildings is handicap accessible. Availability of the renovated apartments is extremely limited due to popularity. Off-street parking lots are available for personal vehicles. Parking permits are purchased from the Parking Department at 1501 Irving Hill Road. Apartments are equipped with a thermostatically-controlled gas furnace and water heater. Residents may install their own window air conditioners with prior approval from the Stouffer Place maintenance supervisor. All floors in the apartment are covered with linoleum tile. The bathroom has a tub with shower. Each apartment is provided with a full-sized refrigerator and a gas or electric stove. Washers, dryers or dishwashers may not be installed. Waterbeds cannot be accommodated in any unit. Stouffer Place residents are responsible for all utility bills including gas, electricity and water. Contact NTS (Network and Telecommunications Services) at 864-9300 for information about telephone service, internet access, and cable TV service options. Visit ResNet or ACS for more information. A twenty-four-hour laundry area is located in Building No. 1, which is equipped with coin- or smartcard-operated washers and dryers as well as a vending machine. No pets are permitted at Stouffer Place except for fish in aquariums. On-site maintenance and repair of the buildings is provided by staff between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Emergency maintenance is available after hours and on weekends by calling the office, which is open 24 hours a day. The Stouffer Place neighborhood has several playgrounds for children, and the on-site children’s library (located in the Stouffer Community Center) is a favorite place for residents to relax and enjoy time together. The Stouffer neighborhood also plays host to the Hilltop Child Development Center, an exceptional facility and educational program. Priority for child care and classroom space is given to KU students, staff and faculty. Information about bus service for public school-age children is available from the Lawrence School District offices. And for detailed information on daycare options in Lawrence, contact the KU Dependent Care Referral Service at (785) 864.4648. EligibilityStudents To be eligible for Stouffer Place Family Student Housing, applicants must be full-time, degree-seeking students enrolled during the principal part of the year (August through May). Undergraduates are required to be enrolled in 12 hours and graduate students in 9 hours per semester. Students must be married and/or have (a) dependent child(ren) residing with them on a full-time basis. ExceptionsVisiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, staff and other students are occasionally accommodated, based on unique individual needs and review of housing alternatives within the department. Priority, however, is given to married, degree-seeking students, and/or students with dependent children. Only after all requests from degree-seeking students have been honored will space be offered to visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, faculty/staff, and other special cases. Generally, individuals defined in this paragraph are limited to one year of occupancy. AvailabilityBecause of the location, convenience, and low cost of Stouffer Place Apartments, it is not uncommon for applicants to wait 6 months for a one-bedroom apartment. The wait-list for two- and three-bedroom apartments is longer. We encourage you to contact us by phone at (785) 864-4560 or via e-mail at housing@ku.edu. Due to the high demand and limited number of renovated two- and three-bedroom apartments, wait-listing may exceed a year. Since only 10 three-bedroom units are available at Stouffer Place, families of five or six are given priority. Married applicants are required to provide proof of marriage; heads of households must provide proof of dependency of child(ren). Dependent child(ren) must reside with the student on a permanent basis. These documents must be authenticated or written in English. Two- and three-bedroom apartments are limited to students with children. Students wishing to secure a Stouffer Place apartment should complete the application form (also available from the Department of Student Housing). Return the completed application form, along with a $35.00 non-refundable application fee (U.S. currency), to: KU Department of Student Housing Priority is based on the date your application and fee are received by Student Housing. The regular contract period begins July 1 and terminates on June 30 of the following year. The contract may be terminated by giving 30 days advance notice in writing. |
