Tri-Beta Minutes

The following members were present: Neal Anson, Shannon Banes, Cecilia Compton, Kelsie Cropp, Melanie Curtis, Emily Faurot, Misty Koch, April Morrison, Jim Puhl, Miguel Ramirez, Erin Scott, Chelsea Miller, Lori Amey, Brett Begnoche, Lindsay Anderson, Jessica Gnau, Chad Ammar, Mark Ruder.

Faculty advisor Dr. Greg Burg was also present.

 

I. Membership Certificates

      A.  National membership certificates and cards were passed out to those inducted in the Spring 2002.

II. Bylaws

      A.  The new Tri-Beta bylaws were voted on and accepted

      B.   They may be viewed on the website www.ku.edu/~tribeta/

III. Executive board nominations

A.  VP of Service – Miguel Ramirez

B.   Historian – Cecilia Compton

IV. Community Service Activities

A. RoeFest

1) Run/walk for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)

2) Saturday October 5, 2002 in Roeland Park

        a)  We will carpool to this event

3) Talk to Neal if you are interested in going!

B.   Jubilee Café

1) Friday October 25, 2002 (6am-9am)

2) Miguel will send out an email to remind everyone

C.  Faculty Mixer ideas

      1) Would like to put together a lunch to invite professors and graduate students

              a) Biology club also does an informative student/faculty mixer in the Fall

      2) Could possibly help out ASM (American Society of Microbiology) with the Chili cook-off

V.  Tri-Beta T-shirts

      A.  There are still some left over from last year

            1) They are available for purchase in the BioStore (3rd floor Haworth)

      B.   We are taking new ideas for this year’s T-shirt design.  Submit your entries either to Neal or Jennifer (VP of Social)

VI. Meeting change

      A.  The November meeting has been changed from Wednesday Nov. 13 at 5:30 to Thursday Nov. 14 at 4:30 (Location TBA)

VII. Undergraduate Research Presentations

      A. Miguel Ramirez – Facilitated gene entry with implications to gene therapy

      B. Neal Anson – Ciliary dynamics in the presence of lithium in T. thermophila.
