Tri-Beta Minutes

The following members were present: Neal Anson, Shannon Banes, Cecilia Compton, Jessica Gnau, Chelsea Miller, Christine Murray, and Erin Scott.

 

Faculty advisor Dr. Greg Burg was also present.

 

I. Old Business

      A.  Funds

            1. Senate rejected a bill to fund Tri-Beta after much debate

            2. We will ask KUUB for small funding support.

II. Spring Semester Activities

      A.  First meeting

            1. When: Tuesday, January 28 at 7pm

            2. Where: Location TBA

      B.   First executive meeting

            1. When: Sunday, January 26 at 6pm

            2. Where: Location TBA

            3. What: Planning the meetings for the spring semester

      C.  District Convention

            1. When: April 11-13

            2. Where: Nebraska

            3. Fees: ~$30 per member

                  a) We are going to ask KUUB to pay half.  If accepted, then the fee will be approximately $15 per member.

                  b) This cost would include food, lodging, and possibly a trip to the zoo.

            4. We will be carpooling

            5. All members are invited to attend this wonderful opportunity to meet other Tri-Beta chapters!

      D.  Initiation of new members and honorary members

            1. When: Sunday, May 4, 2003 (in the evening)

            2. We will be providing a dinner either by funds or potluck

      E.   Social Activities

            1. T-shirt orders

                 a) We will take orders at the first spring meeting (1/28/03)

                 b) Design: Light blue shirts with a watercolor painting of Haworth on the back and the phrase, “There’s no place like home”.

                 c) Orders will need to be prepaid.  Costs have yet to be determined.

            2. Post MCAT Party Bus

                 a) More info on this later

      F.   Community Service Activities

            1. Field Day activities

            2. Salvation Army

                 a) More information concerning these activities will be given at the first spring meeting.

      G.  By-Laws Revisions

            1. The changes to the by-laws concerning membership dues were voted on and accepted.  You can view the updated version of the by-laws on the website www.ku.edu/~tribeta/

      H.  Honorary member election

            1. The following KU biology staff and faculty were nominated for the Tri-Beta honorary member award.

                 a) Jan Elder

                 b) Dr. Craig Martin

                 c) Dr. James Orr

                 d) Dr. Sandra Quackenbush

                 e) Dr. Dean Stetler

            2. Nominations will continue to be open via email until December 1, 2002

            3. Elections will occur via email from Dec. 1 to Dec. 15.

            4. The elected honorary member will be announced at the first spring meeting

      I.    Application Form

            1. The Tri-Beta application form has been revised to include the new fee amounts.
