Philanthropy

Large scale philanthropy efforts are made by all Greek students at KU in the fall/spring. The Rock Chalk Review held each spring is just one example. Tri Delta's were one of five groups chosen to perform in 2004. This event raised $52,000 for the United Way. Tri Delta has been in Rock Chalk Review six times from 1997 to 2004.

Philanthropic involvement is an important part of each chapter’s activities. Nationally, Tri Delta developed a partnership in 1999 with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee. Due to the tremendous support from Tri Delta chapters around the country, we have raised over $190,000 for the hospital. This enormous support inspired St. Jude’s to dedicate an entire wing in Tri Delta’s name. In order to continue to raise donations for St. Jude’s, we hold an annual fall philanthropy event. Last year we held a mud volleyball tournament with the men of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. The day was a great success, complete with pizza, friends, volleyball, and a ton of mud!

In addition to our fall philanthropy, we also participated in Tri Delta’s holiday fundraising project. We each sent Holiday Cheer cards to our family and friends on behalf of St. Jude’s. Our chapter thrived with this event and raised over $2,658, placing us second in the nation!

Each spring, we organize our philanthropy to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving. One of our own Theta Omega sisters, Erin Michener, was the victim of a tragic drunk driving accident in 1992. In her memory, we raise money through our annual “Back to the Beach” event. It is held at Clinton Lake on the outskirts of Lawrence, where many KU students join our chapter for an afternoon of comical, non-competitive games, followed by a barbeque.

We have sponsored a pizza fundraiser at The Wheel Pizza Company, selling slices at twenty-five cents each and whole pizzas for two dollars. All the proceeds were donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Community Service

One of Tri Delta’s ideals is service. Our Theta Omega chapter strives to reach our ideals by asking all members to donate 15 hours of their time to community service. Some of the organizations that the women of Delta Delta Delta actively participate in include:

Adopt-A-School Best Buddies
Jubilee Cafe
Youth Friends
Natural Ties
Habitat for Humanity

The women of our chapter participate in many other charitable events in the area. A Day of Caring held each fall is just one example. The Theta Omega’s here at KU know the importance of helping others and giving back to the community of Lawrence.
