Studying and Discussing World Religions

Joan Reiber

This group will follow the study course Great World Religions. We will focus on one of the following religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, or Judaism; the group will decide. Meets the second and fourth Monday of the month at 10:30 am at Joan Reiber's home or a member's home where the group can view and discuss the DVD. The first meeting is Monday, September 26, at 2505 Yale Road.

Art du Jour at the Spencer

Explore the rich and diverse collection at the Spencer Museum of Art, meeting on the third Thursday of the month from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Meet at the Spencer and discover this internationally known collection as we focus on a variety of topics: special exhibitions, behind the scenes, conservation and collecting. One topic or area will be chosen each month. UWC member Jerrye Van Leer (Spencer's Tour and Visitor Services Coordinator( will find and share treasures of the Spencer.  
 

Antiques Group

Meets the fourth Thursday of the month September through May with alternate dates for November, December, March and May. Each member serves on one monthly committee each year as hostess, committee chair/member, presenter or trip organizer. The committee contacts each member as a reminder of the place and program and to determine attendance. Annual dues are $5.00.  
 

Bird Watching

Jill Barringer (842-3025) Meeting dates and times will vary; bird watching in the early morning during spring and fall migrations may include trips outside Lawrence. Bring a good pair of binoculars and a bird identification book.  
 

Book Discussion (Afternoon)

Martha Rose (842-1427) Meets the fourth Wednesday of each month except for an alternate date in November and no meeting in December. Meets at 1:30 p.m. in the Gallery Room of the Lawrence Public Library. Books are chosen by the group and are either a classic, going to be a classic, or interesting selections that your usual book group might miss.

Book Exchange

THIRD THURSDAY BRIDGE meets on the third Thursday of the month in a member’s home, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. FOURTH WEDNESDAY BRIDGE meets the fourth Wednesday of each month except December in a member’s home (unless there are ttoo many members to do so) from 1:00-4:00 p.m. For both bridge groups you do need a knowledge of bridge, but players are friendly and helpful. It's like riding a bicycle. You don't forget!  
 

Cocktail Fare

Meets the first Friday of the month October through May (except for January and February) from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. in a member’s home. Spouses and invited guests are included. Each member serves on a monthly committee preparing appetizers with the host responsible for beverages; lots of good food and conversation. Co-hosts share in the drinks cost.

Gourmet Dinner

Jane Kuwana (841-3721) Cooperatively prepare monthly dinners for four to five couples in a member's home. Themes are often ethnic.

Usually meets the second Wednesday of the month at varying times depending on the season and activity. In the winter months the group meets in a member's home.Out-of-town events are planned in the spring. No meetings in January, July, and August.  
 

Informal Supper Group

Meets the second Sunday of the month at 5:30 p.m. during October through June. No meetings in January and May. Hostesses provide entree and each participant brings a side dish. Most meetings are at the Smith Center unless hostesses' homes are available.Each member pays a small fee to help defray room costs and liquid refreshments.  
 

Jabberwalkers

Sherry Slade (841-2093) Meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Lied Center parking lot at 7:15 a.m. for campus walking. During cool, inclement weather, the group meets on the third floor of Allen Field House at 7:15 a.m.

Meets in February, March, and April, 1:00-3:00 p.m. on the second an fourth Mondays at the Dole Institute of Politics. Exact dates are not known at this time but there will be a charge to cover honoraria for speakers and related costs.  
 

Mah Jongg

Start a new Mah Jongg group. Choose the day, time, and place and we will teach your group how to play the fascinating and challenging game of Mah Jongg. Sign up with one or more other players. Mah Jongg is an individual game (you don't need a partner) and is played by groups of two, three, or four people. Time and location to be determined.  
 

Needlework and Chat

Betty Mitscher (842-9334) Meets the third Thursday of the month in a member's home from 1:30-3:30 pm. all levels and all types of needlework welcome. Join us for a couple of hours of fun and conversation.

New members will be welcomed at a luncheon September 9 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Chancellor's campus home. Designed for those new to UWC or rejoining after many years, as well as members who wish to mentor newcomers or meet new people. Activities focus on special places in the community and on campus. Planning meeting will be September 18 at Susan Ralston's. The group meets the second Friday of most months.  
 

Spanish Plays

Meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in a member's home. Reads mostly contemporary plays and has an annual potluck meal with spouses.

Meets four Fridays during the year (two in the fall and two in the spring) from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the Malott Room for friendship, hors d'oeuvres and libations. Hostesses each month coordinate decor, food, drinks, and clean up. Can include a guest or spouse. Cost: $5.00 per person each TGIF to cover Union and drinks.
