Interest Groups
Organized in 1900 a
group first named the "Women of the Faculty," then "Ladies
of the Faculty" (1902), next "University Women's Association"
(1914) and finally, in December 1921, "University Women's
Club", devoted its time and energy toward assisting the female
students, providing scholarships (first one in 1915, $100), entertaining
new women faculty and wives, war efforts, and the on-going task
of re-writing the Club's constitution.
In 1952 a new component
of the Club's program was added - interest groups. Then and now,
Interest Groups offer UWC members the opportunity to become acquainted
with others sharing a common interest in a smaller group setting.
Seven groups were offered in 1952 with five more added the following
year: Antiques, Bridge (Beginners, Intermediate, and Social),
Play Reading, Creative Writing, Exercise, Art History, Gardening,
Painting, Sketching, French and Spanish Conversation. Most of
the groups have continued through the years as new groups, many
involving food and drink, were added. Gourmet luncheon and dinner
groups are still active but more informal gatherings are now included:
Come as You Are Breakfast, Informal Supper Group, Cocktail Fare,
and TGIF evenings. This year, 20 different interest groups are
offered. Any UWC member is welcome to start a new interest group
by contacting the Interest Group Chair and being responsible for
organizing the group.
